Before You Visit a Skin Clinic

For a suspected skin cancer check:

First, document any changes you've noticed in your skin. Take photos or notes about when you first spotted the concerning area and how it may have changed. This really helps the doctor assess the situation.

Check your whole body and make note of any other spots you'd like the doctor to look at while you're there. Examining areas like your back and scalp can be tricky - maybe ask a family member to help.

Make a list of questions you want to ask the doctor. You might want to know about your family history of skin cancer, your personal risk factors, or what preventive steps you can take.

For a beauty treatment:

Take it easy on your skin for a few days before - avoid harsh scrubs or new products that might cause irritation. If you're planning treatments like fillers or chemical peels, you'll want your skin to be calm.

Make sure to mention any medications you're taking or skin conditions you have when you book the appointment. This includes acne medications or if you're prone to cold sores.

Go with clean skin on the day - skip makeup if you can. This gives the clinician the clearest view of your skin and helps them recommend the most suitable treatments.

For both types of visits:

  • Write down any skin products you currently use
  • Bring your health insurance information if applicable
  • Schedule your appointment at a time when you won't be rushed
  • Consider taking someone with you for support if you're feeling nervous
